When we were considering to build a new house at Portage lake front, Houghton, Michigan. Ed was highly recommended to us by a friend who was a subcontractor.
After meeting with other builders and Ed, We decide to have Ed built our house. We were glad we made a right decision.
Ed built the house for us with energy conservation. He help us choose the right materials. His crew and workers were conscientious with their jobs.
We are happy with our house. Ed is always there when we need him.

We had a dream...
All of my life I dreamed about ownning a lovely house on a lake. When I met my husband, I realized that he shared that dream. All we were lacking was the house and the lot on the lake. So, after many years we purchased a lake lot in the fall of 2007. Next, we needed a plan and a builder. We went to an architect to design a plan. After putting the plan out for bids, we realized that the architext's plan just wasn't workable. Enter Ed, the Problem Solver. We contacted many builders during that time and found Ed to be the most knowledgeable and easiest to work with. I discussed with Ed the reasons why we couldn't build the house the architect designed and he suggested an alternative that fit our needs perfectly. He eagerly agreed to each of the modifications we wanted to truly customize it to make it our dream home.
That pattern carried on throughout the entire building process. To every question or concern that we could come up with, Ed had a great suggestion or solution.
We found Ed and the guys to be delightful to work with. They were pleasant, professional, had a strong work ethic and are masters of their craft. The house is high quality and was done on time and within the budget. Not to metion the fact that the reaction whenever people see the house for the first time is a lot of WOW's! We are thrilled with the house Ed built for us.
I had heard storied from other people on how stressful building a home can be. This was not the case with Ed. This was a stress-free project. Ed's North Country Builders has my highest recommendation.
The house Ed build for us is great - I no longer have a dream, I get to live a dream.
Thank you, Ed!

Friends of ours had a home built by Ed, so when it was time to look into building our home on Lake Superior, we decided to include him in the bid process. Our home, although small in square footage was a challenging home to build. We felt confident that Ed would provide us with a home that would be well built with all the energy conservation ideas we incorporated into it. Three years later, we couldn't be happier! We know we chose the right contractor for our very special home in our paradise! We also know that Ed is still there should we need him!

In November 2002 my wife, Mari, accepted a position with Michigan Tech University and our family decided to come to Houghton, Michigan for a visit. It would be 10 months before we would make the move from Kansas. We arrived in January 2003 to look at the campus and to conduct a brief “house-hunting” trip to Houghton. But, the limited availability of houses on the market made building a home the logical option. Near the top of our list of things to do was to find a builder.
We had a pretty nice floor plan in mind and it was critical that we find a builder we could trust. With the recommendation of our now new neighbors , we contacted Ed Panke of North Country Builders. We spent several hours with Ed explaining our preferences and expectations, since we would not be here to watch the house being constructed. Ed took us to see his house and after a very nice visit I said to Ed, “If you build our house as well as yours, you have the job. Ed guaranteed that he would. As luck would have it, Ed also owned the perfect lot in Woodhaven Estates for our walk-out ranch floor plan.
Ed kept in constant contact via phone and fax to consult and verify all details of the construction. The entire process was very painless and stress-free. Ed, his crew and sub-contractors were professional every step of the way. End result: one beautiful, sound and well-built home for the Buche family.

During the spring of 2001 my wife, Karen, and I sought a builder for the house we intended to have built on the shore of Lake Superior near Houghton, Michigan. Since we are from Houston, Texas, this process was not easy because we knew no one personally who had built a house in the area. We interviewed two large contractors and three smaller ones including Ed Panke of Ed's North Country Builders and selected Ed.
We were not disappointed. Ed and his crew were wonderful and did a superb job. We wanted a very high quality house and were concerned that we might not accurately convey to Ed what "high quality" meant to us. But Ed did not let us down. We got at least as good quality as we had hoped for. Not only Ed's crew but each of his subcontractors and their crews did excellent work and Karen and I are pleased to consider them all friends.
When we found the perfect lakeside property on Portage Lake, we had to take the house that came with it. The lay- out of the house was ok, but the outside was very unattractive. We had a clear idea of what we wanted to accomplish, and it was going to be a major renovation.
After talking to most of the big, well-known building contractors in the area, we met Ed Panke. We soon realized that we had struck gold. Ed immediately understood our concept, and had some good ideas of his own.
We wanted a lodge-style home with rustic qualities that would be in harmony with our beautiful surroundings. We designed a fireplace, open to both the living room and the dining room. Ed’s talented crew perfectly implemented the design, and his sub-contractors did beautiful stonework to finish the job. Ed designed a large covered porch with a screened section, and again, his crew did the job to perfection. A lot of hand-crafting and great attention to detail went into the construction.
A year after the first stage of the renovation, we tackled the kitchen. We had a carefully thought-out plan, and Ed and his crew did the job extremely well. The plan required the removal of a wall and reinforcement of the ceiling. The completed job is a truly wonderful kitchen that is a treat to work in.
The outside of the house has a new look also. Ed stripped off the vinyl siding and replaced it with rough-sawn cedar. A dark green shingled roof and green trim were the look we were striving for. A steeper and higher roofline improved the overall appearance of the house. New windows and doors and a cultured stone foundation were the finishing touches.
We recommend Ed’s North Country Builders to anyone who wants their job done skillfully and with good design insight.
